SEO is all about getting your website ranked higher in search results of search engines. However, this is an aim of the webmaster. What is the fist step in process of SEO? It is getting found by Search engines and getting indexed by them. So that we can get into the listing first, then we can compete for the first position of listing.

Let us first know how Google or other search engines find your website content and what is indexing:

Crawling: It is a process by which Google finds your new content. They use software program called a spider or Google bot to crawl the entire website in search or new content.

Indexing: It is a process of collecting information about website to store in database to later return the information as a search result. These snippets of information collected by Google spider or bots stored in the database is called index.

We all know ranking in search results of Google is time consuming process and may take several weeks or months. One of the things which takes time and is not worth waiting for getting found by Google and indexed by it. Crawling and indexing of websites by Google is done on a regular basis. Although Google crawls the entire web, however, it cannot be done frequently because, crawling the entire website requires a lot of resources.

Hence Google, apart from doing an entire web crawling and indexing has also gotten mechanism of crawling and indexing different website differently. For example, if a website is a popular high authority website, for example CNN.com will get crawled and indexed  frequently as compared to a new or a less popular and low authority website.

So if your website is a new website you may have to wait for Google to crawl and index your website which may sometimes take weeks. However,  there are some techniques which can be followed to speed up this process. Effectiveness of the techniques is such that you may get your website indexed in a couple of days if not hours.

Before you can push yourself to get indexed it is a good idea to check if you are already indexed or not. To check what all of your website is indexed you can preform a search using one of Google search operator “site:”. Go to the Google search bar and type “site:yourdomainname.com”. For example, if I want to see what has been indexed by Google from my site I will type “site:smarttechnbiz.com”. This will bring up all the web pages of my website that are indexed in Google.

You can perform the above steps in case if your web page has been on your website for quite some time and you want to make sure whether it has been indexed or not. In case if you don’t find your web page in a search result or your web page is new you can proceed to the next step.

There are many tools which have been provided by Google itself to help you get your website indexed quickly. So to start with we will see how to use Google tools and then we can move on to other methods.

Sitemap: It is an HTML or XML files which contain all URLs of your website. Search engines use these sitemaps to find new pages on your website. Having a site map makes a lot difference in indexing of web pages. A website who has sitemap and has submitted it to search engines will be indexed lot faster than a website which has not got it.

Fetch as Google Tool: It is webmaster tool you can use this tool to ask Google to crawl and index your website. To access this tool you need to login to Google webmaster tool and then click on the website you want to be crawled (in case if you have multiple site in your webmaster account). Then on the left hand side choose the Crawl menu and then choose Fetch as Google option from the dropdown menu. Now you need to enter the URL and click on Fetch button. Once the fetch is complete you will get the fetch status. Now follow  below steps to get your URL indexed.

  1. Click Submit to Index, shown next the status of a recent, successful fetch in the Fetches Table.
  2. Select Crawl only this URL to submit one individual URL to the Google for re-crawling. You can submit up to 500 individual URLs per week in this way.
  3. Select Crawl this URL and its direct links to submit the URL as well as all the other pages that URL links to for re-crawling. You can submit up to 10 of requests of this kind per month.
  4. Click Submit to let Google know that your request is ready to be processed.

After submitting your URL you need to wait for Google to process your request. Although google has given this tool but they do not guarantee to index all your change as they depend on their algorithm to update their index.

Submit your Content to Google: This tool helps Google to discover your newest content. You can log in to google webmaster tool and submit your the content’s URL for it to be discovered and indexed.  You can use this link to submit your content http://www.google.com/submityourcontent/. Depending on the type of content and type of publisher you can choose between different options.

These tools provided by Google are of great help for webmasters. However, I would recommend not to completely depend on these tools entirely,  but also try other methods to get indexed. I am suggesting it for two reasons. First, you would be safe in case if these tools are withdrawn by Google, which has happened in the past. Second other methods which I am going to discuss now, not only increase your chance of getting indexed faster, but it also helps to increase your website presence on the internet and it also brings more traffic to your website directly other than Google search.

Apart from Google Tools below are some methods to get your website content indexed faster.

Link building: Those who know about SEO they know how important role link building play in page ranking of a website. Apart from page ranking these links also act as bridge for Google spider or bot to your website. Google bot follow the link around the web to discover new content. So more the number of links you have faster are the chances for your website to be discovered and indexed. Although number of links are good for your website to be indexed, but the focus should be more towards building quality link rather than quantity of link. A link build with quality content not only passes good page rank to a website, but also brings direct traffic to your website. In contrast a large number of spam link may get your website. So I  would suggest a quality link building approach rather than a quantity link building approach.

Social media presence: Create your social media presence. Create your Facebook fan page and twitter account. Creating  a social media presence not only bring audience to your website, but it also gives you natural link when you share your content here. It helps Google bots to follow the link to discover your content.

Social bookmarking site: Share your content on the social bookmarking site like Delicious, Reddit and Stumbleupon. It is again a good source of getting links and bringing direct traffic to your website.

Guest blog post: Do lot of guest blog posting as it will not only help you to get backlinks but also establish your website as a brand. While choosing a website for guest blogging always choose a website which has good website authority and quality content. This will not only pass page rank but also increase your website domain authority.

Blog catalog: It is a blog network site which drives log of traffic to a blog and link to your website.

Internal linking: Linking the web pages is equally important as it is to create a backlink from another website. In case some of your website content is already indexed. Internal linking building from one web page to other helps the crawlers to find the new content easily next time they crawl your website again.

Update your blog with new content. If you keep updating your blog with new content it signals Google bots to index your site frequently.

These are some of common and efficient ways to get your website indexed faster, but it is not limited to these methods only there are a lot of other methods which are getting discovered by webmasters and are being applied. You can search the internet and I am sure you will find many more however, I would like to give a word of caution here that do not use any such method which may be intended to spam Google index else you can in be in trouble an may be inviting a penalty on your website, but if you have any useful tip pleas do share it here.
