How to choose web hosting or which is the best web hosting solution? This is the first question which comes up in mind when we decide to build our own website. Choosing a web hosting plan and web hosting provider sometimes can be confusing if you are not that technical. So I decided to put up a post which will help you in making your decision.

For people who are just starting I would suggest to start small with a shared web hosting account. Once your business grows you can always upgrade your plan. So I would focus on what features that you should be looking for before buying the services.

Most of us consider the price as a major factor while deciding on hosting provider or hosting plan. However, this should not be the deciding factor because if you compromise on feature now you may land in a situation where you would be under a lot of limitations and switching to another hosting provider may land you in awkward situation which will not only cost you more, but it will be also be at the cost of your website which will have to be taken offline to to complete the transfer.

Moreover, shared hosting is by far the best plan with all feature which is required to run a successful business website. Below are some key point which we need to keep in mind before opting for hosting plan or provider:

  1. Uptime: Internet never sleeps which means there is someone somewhere in the world who is next visitor to your website. So your website should be up 24×7. As per industry standard uptime score of 99.5% is the recommended score. If a company has uptime score below 99% I would not recommend it at all for any plan or even if they offer cheapest plan in the world.
  2. Domain and sub domain limitation: – You should have the facility to add multiple domain and create multiple sub domain out of single domain. This is a quite common feature which is provided in shared hosting some hosting provider even provide unlimited domain and creation of unlimited sub domains out of single. Any shared hosting with single domain is something I would not recommend as there are may provider who provide multiple domain and sub domain feature at competitive rates.
  3. Bandwidth: Aim of the website owner is more traffic so your hosting provider should give you enough bandwidth to accommodate maximum traffic. Most of the hosting provider now provides unlimited bandwidth in the shared hosting so this should be not be a problem. Any provider with not enough bandwidth should not be considered.
  4. Cpanel: You should have minimum access to your hosting account where you can install your website, create database, create email account, upload and download files and perform other website administration without calling technical support. Almost all hosting provider provides panel for this task. It is a user friendly tool which helps you to perform basic website administration. It is available with almost all shared hosting plans with any hosting provider.
  5. Email account: A personalized email account with your domain helps in building brand and reputation. A good hosting provider should give you the option to create multiple email address or even unlimited in a shared hosting plan.
  6. FTP access and FTP account: You should have FTP access to upload and download files from your hosting account which is sometimes very necessary for website maintenance. Along with FTP access, you should be able to create FTP accounts to manage FTP access.
  7. Disk space: Maximum is the best in terms of disk space. So choose the plan which has above all feature and provides you with maximum disk space so that in future if your website grows this should not be a matter of concern for you.
  8. Database: Again, maximum the better. If you have bought a plan with multiple domain it means that you should be able to create another website in the same hosting plan. Another website would need a separate database for it. So you should have an option to create multiple database.
  9. Technical support: Your hosting provider should have 24×7 operations, technical support who can help you with your queries and issue when it arises so that it does not hamper your user experience.
  10. Refund policy: You should check that hosting provider has refund policy before buying the plan so that in case if you do not think that this is good for you, you can always switch to another service provider without getting stuck.

Apart from above point, there is a suggestion which I would like to make. Every hosting provider offers option between windows and Linux hosting. These are nothing but server OS technology.

If you are simply building a website or any blog this should not make a difference unless you are creating your application which will require certain specification and you may have to choose one or the other. If you are not building any application and your aim is for a website or blog, I would highly recommend to go for Linux hosting not only because it is cheaper than windows hosting but also it is much more secure. Moreover, you don’t have to worry about server technology because it is not your job to maintain that, it is the job of your hosting provider to maintain the servers.

If you ask me what hosting provider to choose I would have straight answer I would recommend only three hosting provider out of three I am using Godady and for other two I have researched a lot on them and have gotten positive reviews from their users. Click on the links below to view their hosting plans.

Blue hosting

Godady

Hostgator

You can choose any one of the service providers according to your requirement and budget. I am suggesting above hosting provider as I am really satisfied with services of Godady and bloggers whom I have spoken to use service provider from above three and are really satisfied. I hope it would be the same for you.
