Chapter 7 – Keyword research using Google Keyword tool.
In this chapter, we will take a look on how to use Google keyword tool for keyword research. This chapter will contain basic information an will be limited to getting the best possible keyword list using this tool.
Google keyword tool also known as Google keyword planner is tool provided by Google to help the advertiser to select a most suitable keyword to advertise on Google. This tool was intended to help advertisers, however, this tool has by far now been a tool for content developer to peep into Google on how searches are being performed in terms of keyword. It gives an insight on what is the volume of search preformed using a particular keyword and what is competition for that keyword on other words, it tells how difficult it is to rank for that keyword.
To use Google keyword Tool you need to have a Gmail account. This tool can be accessed using below two links
The first link will take you directly to the keyword tool and the second link will take you an Adword home page where you will get link call ‘Tool’ on top of page and from the drop down you can choose ‘Keyword Planner’ as shown in the image below.
If you are logging in for the first time to Google Adword you will be asked to confirm some details like, email address, time zone and currency. Please confirm these details correctly in case if you want to use the account later for Google advertising as you will not be able to change it later.
Once you are on the home page of the Google keyword planner. You will get a screen something like image below which will have four main menu. Choose the first menu to begin the keyword research “Search for new keyword and keyword Idea”. Then you will be presented with more option.
To begin the keyword research you will have to start with guess work. In this Chapter we will assume that we have a blog about Dog Care and we want to find keywords so that we can build a content to rank higher for the most important keywords. Let’s say we are writing a post about dog food. Now let us start guessing work. Now to do a guess work you need to think like your audience. What keyword would you type to search about dog food. To start with what first comes in your mind is “dog food”. This was easy wasn’t it.
Now type this word in “Your Product or services box”. Leave the rest of the options to default. In case if you want some specific data for a country or time period. You can choose country by clicking pencil icon in All location box and you can change them by clicking pencil icon in the Date range box. I would suggest not touching this unless it is too much of a requirement. Once You are done, click on “Get Ideas” button at the bottom.
Now it will present you a page with statistics and data for you guessed keyword as shown in the image below. By default it shows the Ad group Idea which is not what we are looking for now. To get more keyword related to your guessed keyword, click on “Keywords Ideas” tab.
This will bring up a list of new key words which are related to your search term which in this case is “Dog food”. So Google through this tool reveals you the treasure of information which lets you know what people are searching to find information about “dog food”.
You would see there are several columns in this data. For now we are only concerned about first three columns. Fist column consists of the keyword list. Second column consists of monthly search volume of corresponding keyword and third column tells abut completion for the keyword.
You can also see the graph of keyword by clicking on the graph symbol present before the numbers in ‘Average monthly searches’ column.
This tool provides very important data in terms of keyword being searched in google and what are their volumes. It is now up to your wisdom to select what keyword you want to select from the list for your content.
Most of the time high volume of searches tempts bloggers to create content for that keyword or use that keyword many time content you are creating for. I would suggest not to create content for keyword just because it has high monthly searches unless you have a good hold on the subject.
Even if you have a good hold on the subject and you manage to create content on high search volume keyword you should be aware that there would be high completion to rank for that keyword. So your new content may take a long time to over rank existing content already ranking for that keyword.
Also, if you try to stuff your content too much with high volume keyword to rank better I would suggest being aware of fact, it should look natural if by any chance it appears to Goole that you have abused the keyword by stuffing it unnecessarily in content you may get penalized.
There are several tools for keyword research, however, this tool is a very good place to begin your keyword research.
