Chapter 7 – Google Webmaster Tools viewing data and using tools Part 3.
In this chapter, we will take a look at “Google Index” menu. This menu contains four submenu we will take a look at each of them.
1. Index Status: This option provides us data about how many pages of our website has been indexed. It would only show the indexed pages of URL version you have selected. So if you have verified www.example.com and example.com and you have selected site example.com it would only show the index status of this version. To show the index status of web of www.example.com you need to select this version of site in webmaster account.
To get a detailed view of index status you can choose “Advanced” tab. This page gives details of pages which has been indexed.
No of pages which has been blocked by robot.txt file. Viewing this data you can find out whether you are blocking only those data which you want to block if not you can check your robot.txt file and make changes.
It also gives information about pages which has been removed from the index.
The chart displayed here gives some important indication about our website status. Ideally, this graph should steadily rise. Showing constant content indexing as the content grows. What we should be looking at is sudden dip or rise in the graph. Sudden dip would mean there are some issue with our website and either google is not able to crawl our website or most of the content are being blocked from being indexed hence indexing is stopped.
Sudden rise in the graph would indicate that there are issues like canonicalization, duplicate content, or automatically generated pages, or there is a possibility that our website is hacked and the contents are being injected into our site.
2. Content Keywords: This section gives information about relevant keywords which Google has found while crawling your website.
3. Remove URL: This is a tool which has been introduced by Google to help webmaster to remove the URL from the index, which they do not want to be shown in search result.
This tool is helpful in case if your website is showing something on search result which can cause or is causing you legal trouble. You can simply submit the URL and choose the type of removal like search results and the cache, just from the cache or if you want an entire directory removed. The removal of a URL can take up to 12 hours.
