Welcome to 2nd Chapter. In the previous chapter, we had a brief discussion about what is SEO, what are the prerequisite of learning SEO. In this chapter we will have a look how users interact with search engines and what are the things which we need to keep in mind while preforming SEO.

By now I think you are almost clear that what is our aim. We are all learning SEO because we understand how important it is now to get your business online through website. It is equally important to market the website effectively so that our website can feature well on search result of search engine so that we have better exposure and more customers in the market.

Lets us now concentrate on the most important element of SEO and that is a user. If there is no one searching for information on the internet then there would be no use of search engines. Search engine exists because people want to search for information on the internet.

Thus, it is more important to understand how users behave with a search engine than how search engine works. Let us take a look how does the whole process start. Everything in human life starts with an idea. The idea could about doing something, finding something or going somewhere. When we have this idea and we need more information about it we ask questions. We put that idea or question in strings of word and give to search engine to give us the relevant result or relevant information about the question which we have.

The search engine looks into its index and tries to find webpages containing the information about the string of words which you have entered in the search box.  They collect all relevant web pages with relevant information and present you with snippets of different web pages so that you can select the best information for yourself.

Remember search engine are not human they do not know what exactly you want they try to present with relevant information and then leave for  you to select best answer from the results they have given to you.

Now how do you react to those results. You start scanning from the top of the page and click on the most relevant link from the top. This is what SEO is all about to bring your site as close as possible on top of page of a search result of first page. Now coming back to how we react to search results.  You click on the link to open the web page and look for information which you wanted if you find the information which you are looking for,  you stay on the site and continue with it. If you don’t find that information or quality of information provided is poor you hit back button and go back to search results and move down to the next link for information.

Think for a moment if you do not find relevant information which you were looking for on first two pages will you not be disappointed. It would be more frustrating if you cannot find answers to your query, even after digging deep into number pages of search result. What would you do, you will try to find an alternative another search engine which can provide you with better results.

Search engines are aware of this fact that if they do not provide you with relevant information you will move towards another search engine. When it comes to user satisfaction Google is the best and has never compromised on on user satisfaction. Google knows how competitive this area is the time they let it loose other search engine will take over and that is the reason Google has strived to maintain customer satisfaction.

So here is the golden rule. “Always create website or content of the website for users, not for search engines”.  If your website does not contain relevant information what users are looking for, Google or other search engine are most likely to ignore your website and bury it deep in the search result.

Most of you would think that why did I talked about users first and not search engines. Had I explained you earlier that how search engine works most of you would have ignored the fact that users are equally import as search engines are.

It is quite intuitive for an SEO professional to over look users and work only for Search engine and try to rank on search result better.  They are more concerned about traffic coming to their website. (By the way, let me explain the jargon “Traffic”. Traffic in SEO is the term used for visitors coming to your website from different sources such as google, bing, Facebook, other websites and so on.)

They tend to forget that even if they are on top of the search result, it is unlikely that they will stay on top forever,  as they are not providing any value to users who are actually searching their results and eventually search engines are going to find this out and throw out the result from the top.  Hence, for success in the long run it is import to focus on user experience as it is to focus on Search Engine for SEO.

So whether you are blogging to make your website rank better in search result or you are trying to blog for money. You need to keep this thing in mind that you need to provide value to users to become successful. Search engines are becoming smarter day by day and you cannot fool them for long. Give what users want as the search engine has the same goal they want to give users what they want. If you help them, they will help you.

This brings us to the end of chapter2. In the next chapter, we will discuss about how search engine works. What they can do and what they cannot.

I would again request you to ask question. I would encourage you to use the forum so that you get better answers to your question.
